Fun at the beach!
We decided to try another beach! So many to choose from. We've been spending most of our time at either Waipatiki Beach or Ocean Beach! So we loaded the car up with body boards, Chili Bin (cool box!), books, towels and headed off down Highway 2! An hour and a half later, having driven about 130kms we were at Porangahau Beach!

Unfortunately on this day the sea swell was 4 meters! So no body boarding! The waves were HUGE! The pictures just don't show it! So after a stroll along the beach and the kids posing for pictures! We stopped for Lunch!

Porangahau Beach must be at least 6 km long! We know that because we decided to take the car down onto the beach and drive along it! Perfectly acceptable to do here! We drove as far as we could before we had to start dodging the drift wood which is actually whole trees! We met other drivers on the beach, and quad bikes!
Dan asked if he could have a go at driving! Not to be left out Louise wanted to have a go too! Some tasks are best suited to a certain parent! I baled out and left Tony too it! If they had wanted to bake 'muffins' I could deal with that! Dan was first to go. Now bear in mind that the Terrano is an automatic! So much easier for them. After a few 'kangaroo' jumps Dan was off down the beach!

Then Louise's turn! Luckily the seat moved forwards enough! And she was off! When they arrived back Tony mentioned that he had to keep shouting at her to look up as she kept looking at her feet (to make sure they were on the right peddles!) or the speedo. Not wanting to be out done by her brother she wanted to make sure that she went the fastest!!

Another great day spent down the beach! And they are looking forward to the next time they can drive! Tony isn't!! Me, I don't mind I'm the photographer!

Oooops forgot more pics of the kids! posing again!

Country side.....
We went to Ocean beach a few days ago. The weather was a bit pants! So the kids didn't go in the sea, the surf rescue had their tent and flags out but it was just too windy and overcast! On the way back we decided to take some pictures to show the kind of scenery Hawkes Bay has! As always click on the pics for a bigger view!
So, first this is Ocean Beach and the view from the top of the road looking down.

Now some Scenery pics. The main mountain range in the pictures is Te Mata Peak. The Peak is 399 metres above sea level, a drive up to its peak will give you panoramic views across to the east coast beach of Mahia and the ski slopes of Mt Ruapehu (in the distance). That's for a sunnier day! Some times you can watch para-gliders and hang gliders launch themselves from the top!

It is very hilly, but the hills are smooth, a bit like 'tellytubby' land! There are lots of steep valleys at the roads edge. As it's summer it's not so green!

Then at the bottom of the valley / plains you see things like this!

A few animal pics. This cow had jumped the fence and was on the road side, and the Goat standing on it's house!

Another Month over......
Well, another month is almost over…… They seem to whiz by at the moment! We’ve (mostly Tony!) finished painting 3 bedrooms, the lounge, the dining / family room and the kitchen. Will post some before and after pics soon! We’ve had the quotes back for replacing the sliding patio doors with Bi-folds and they should be installed by the end of Feb. We seem to be spending $$$ really fast….
Beginning of Feb we’ll be having what they call over here ‘heat pumps’ installed. Otherwise known as Air condition units. So we can have cool rooms for the summer and warm in the winter. I haven’t seen any houses with ‘Rads’ in but I’ve seen ads on the telly for ‘European style heating’!! We don’t have mains gas in Hawkes Bay, all gas appliances are powered by bottle. The kids are looking forward to nice ‘air con’ rooms as the temp has been in the middle 30’s recently making it difficult to get to sleep in the evenings.
We’re waiting on an architect to get back to us, with some drawings for our plans to put a small dormer window in, the store room off the spare bedroom. This will give us some head height to allow for a shower to be fitted as part of its conversion to an en-suite for that room. He is also drawing up some plans to move the separate upstairs toilet into the family bathroom so that we can extend our en-suite into the toilet area and create an almost ‘wet room’ en-suite for us!
The removals company has been booked for Monday 18th Feb to move us from our rental into our New home. A distance of about 1.5 miles! So if you're going to send anything to us please use our NEW ADDRESS from now is ok!
The kids go back to school on Monday 4th for the new school year. Dan will be in Year 11 and Louise will be in Year 8. The school terms here run roughly as follows
Term 1 - 4 Feb to 18 April
Term 2 - 5 May to 4 July
Term 3 - 21 July to 26 Sept
Term 4 - 13 Oct to 12 Dec
This is Dan’s NCEA year (National Certificate of Educational Achievement) equivalent to his GCSE’s. So it will be a busy year for him. He is also looking forward to March when he can apply for his NZ Learner Driving Licence. This allows him to be out on the roads but he must be accompanied by a 'supervisor' some one who holds a full NZ licence. After holding his Learner Licence for at least six months he can then take his ‘Restricted Licence Test’. This is a practical test of his driving, if he passes, then he can drive on his own, but not between 10 pm and 5 am. Between these times he must have a supervisor in the front passenger seat with him..! So by Sept - Oct he could be out by himself!!! (Tooo scary to think about at the mo!!!) After that there is another time period before he can then apply for his Full Licence! Oh, and mentioning that, Tony and I have yet to sit our ‘Theory Driving Test’. We can drive on our UK Licence for 12 months! Luckily we don’t have to take a practical test!!
Louise spent a week in early January training with the Napier City Football School. It was a summer holiday program running from 9am to 3pm for a week. She had a great time and really enjoyed her herself. Especially wearing her Spurs shirt. Most of the NZ kids here either support Man United or Liverpool…. She was in her element trying to show them the errors of their ways and even with the football coaches!! Unfortunately she has to wait until she’s 14 before she can join their ‘girls’ team. But hopefully with school starting in Feb, the new football season won’t be far away. (Ooops! Soccer not football!)
The weather is still very nice.... lots of sun. A few rainy days and when it rains it really pours down. We caught the edge of Cyclone Funa (it hit Fiji!) as it moved south, quite windy! We've missed winter and we haven't worn coats and I haven't worn proper shoes for months. I've been living in Jandels! (flip flops!) I even have a jandel suntan!
Thought I'd let you know the cost of a few things here in NZ Dollars... Although all the prices of things are in cents the lowest value coin is a 10cent. So they do rounding at the till up or down.!

Sledging!
Ok so we don't have any snow in Napier, But we can go 'sledging'..! All you need is a large piece of Cardboard and a hill! Luckily for us we had the appropriate equipment and a hill is just a stroll away from the rental. So off we all went!
It's a popular past time here (Where we live anyway!) there are always left over bits of cardboard scattered around. Even though there is a large sign instructing you to take your cardboard home!
So the kids set off first! Hopefully from the pictures you can see that the hill is quite steep and the kids will confirm that you can go really fast down the hill.

As the editor I have the privilege of uploading the pictures so there will be none of me where I fail to stop and get catapulted off my piece of cardboard and end up on the grass face down! But there are some of Tony and the kids!

And then me and Dan and Lou walking up the hill!

And we collected our cardboard on the way back down. An afternoon spent laughing our heads off!! Great fun!

New Years Day!!
Happy New Year!! We spent New Years eve at some friends out on their 'dick'!! drinking till the early hours. I was on the 'sprite' as I had drawn the short straw and had to drive! So Tony took full advantage and polished off quite a few bottles of beer and glasses of wine. Dan wasn't with us he had been invited to a friends and had stayed over. We eventually arrived home around 1:30am and then had a sleep in until 10am New years day. After we collected Dan from his friends we went to the Races! (Click on the pictures for a bigger image!)

Hawkes Bay New Years Day Raceday, the sun was shining and we had a great day. Many people had arrived with their cars and had unpacked picnics, chairs, set up gazebos, BBQ's and made a whole day of it. We arrived in time for the 4th race at 2:35pm. We each picked a horse and had $2 each way bets. Dan's horse (SKIMMIO) came home 1st and mine was 2nd to last. In the next race Louise's horse won (THE PIPER) and mine wasn't placed. Tony's (3 legged donkey!!) choices came home somewhere, but were not placed in any of the races we bet on.
For the next race we decided to go round to see the horses walking round prior to the jockey's getting on.

I decided to go for number 10 LA MONET. Dan was with me at the rail and we were talking about what horses to pick. I mentioned to Dan that I'll have number 10, but then said it will probably come last like my other choices. Then the lady next to us said that number 10 was her horse!!! Oh dear! Ummmm Er! how to get out of that! I mumbled a kind of apology, mentioned that my previous choices hadn't come anywhere and slowly moved away. Well, when Race 6 came Number 10 Won!
We spent $48 dollars on bets and won $46 dollars and a few cents back! Not bad and we didn't have to pay to go in at the gate! The steward said 'Happy New Year, it's your lucky day go in before I change my mind'!!
