Dan's Birthday......

Today Dan had some friends around for a Pool and Movie afternoon to celebrate his 15th birthday.... A little later than it should have been!

They started off having fun around the pool....Water pistols, Water bombs and buckets!

Tony even managed to join in the fun.... and ended up in the pool fully clothed!

Then we ordered 5 large 'domino's pizzas'.... They all come with bbq sauce here! And they moved down to the TV room to watch a movie on the home cinema system which is Tony's new toy... Nice 100" screen...!

Then time to sing 'HAPPY BIRTHDAY'......

Jack Johnson Concert!

On Saturday 22nd we went to see Jack Johnson perform at the Church Road Winery! There were two sections the 'no seats' down by the stage and 'with seats' on the hill! We went for seats - we had to bring our own - About 11,500 people were on the grass by the stage and about 3,000 of us on the grassy hill! It was a BYO Beer and Wine event, and picnic. The warm up act was a chap called Matt Costa, sang similar to Jack Johnson.

So.........Some pictures.....

Waiting for the start up....

Kids making funny faces while I'm taking pictures...!

A rare photo of myself and Tony!

Squint.... and you might just see 'Matt Costa' on stage!

Ummmm! Jack Johnson on stage! Believe me he is there! somewhere!

World Record Attempt!

Today Dan and Louise joined hundreds of others at attempting to break the world record for the 'Largest water fight ever'. It was organised by the Variety Club and entry was what is commonly called here a 'gold coin donation' ie $1 (same as £1! even has the queen's head on!)

The rules were that every one registering had to have a water pistol, no buckets, Balloons etc rules are rules and it had to be water pistols! The current record is held by a Los Angeles University with 1,173 participants! Look it up under Human Achievements - Mass Participation! Hopefully here in Napier there was sufficient turnout to beat the current record. But we'll have to wait and see once the head count has been made public.

They were all split into 2 sides....... Then a massive big count down..

Get Reeeeeeeeeady! Gooooooooooooo!

I managed to find Louise and some of her friends as they stopped for a refill!

Then they caught site of Dan going for a refill and ambushed him!!!

Unfortunately Dan's friends had deserted him!

And then on the way back to the car we met some of the NZ Breakers! They are a basketball team and they are very tall!!!

New Zealand Horse of the Year Show

The New Zealand Horse of the Year Show (HOY) was held in Hastings, and was on for 4 days. It opened on the 5th and finished on 9th. We went on Saturday afternoon. Dan met up with some friends, whilst Lou had to 'hang around' with us! We watched various riders compete in the Dressage and Show jumping arenas. It took me a while to sort out when to take action shots as to start off all my pics were of this type.!!

After a while I managed to get the hang of it and manage to snap a few good pics.

The highlight for the public was Mark Todd competing in the Eventing Challenge. He is hoping to be selected for the NZ Team for the Olympics. These pictures are of Mark Todd in action on his horse 'Gandalf'.

And then receiving the Winners sash!

Rodeo!

We drove up State Highway 5 the Napier to Taupo route to a little place called Te Pohue! When I say little, a gas station and a shop! The Rodeo was just outside Te Pohue. We didn't know what to expect, Tony was expecting a seating stand. What we actually found was that the regulars put old sofas in the back of their Ute's and pickups and sit in those. Many arrived with their Chilli bins and fold out chairs ready for the whole day event. It seems that the Kiwi's when they have to drive to an event they make a whole day of it. So some had their Gazebo's up picnic spread out. We only stayed a few hours as Dan had made plans to meet up with some friends. These are the events that we watched.

The 'Rope and Tie' Event is where the rider has to 'catch' their steer, Throw it to the ground, Wrap the rope 3 times round it's legs and then leave it to lie still for 5 seconds.

Then we watched some 'Barrel Racing'. The riders have 3 barrels (oil drums) which they have to ride around. If they knock one over then they get time penalties. There were some kids whizzing around these barrels...

After the Barrel racing was the Junior Calf Ride. These were quite small kids all riding little calfs. I think they had to try and stay on for 45secs!

Here are the tired calfs!

While they took a break for lunch, they called kids that were watching into the Rodeo arena where they had 'Sheep Catching'. Around 8 Sheep had red ribbons tied to an ear. The idea was that the kids had to catch a sheep and grab the ribbon. Those that caught a sheep and a ribbon won a prize! Sweets!

Next time we go, we'll be ready with our fold out seats and chilli bin. To watch the Steer Ride, Bull Ride, Steer Wrestling, Bare back, Saddle Bronc as we missed these events!

Forgot about this picture! A cowboy!

School Activities

Louise and Dan both participate with various school activies. Dan plays 'FUTSAL' for the school in his year. Never heard of Futsal before! Me neither! Below has been cut'n'pasted from NZSoccer.com......

Futsal is the only form of ‘indoor football’ or ‘five-a-side’ that is officially approved by FIFA and New Zealand Football. The name "Futsal" comes from the merging of the Spanish/Portuguese words for football (Futbol or Futebol) and the French or Spanish word for "Indoor" (Salon or Sala). The game of Futsal is played on a firm, flat surface on a court ranging in size from that of a standard basketball court to the full FIFA International size of 42 x 25 metres. The special feature of the game is the unique properties of the ball, which has a low rebound. The game develops close individual ball skills as the court is small and players are forced into limited space & option scenarios. Games are usually fast-paced, with players receiving more touches and are constantly placed in demanding decision making, limited space situations that they would face on a greatly reduced scale playing 11-a side outdoor soccer. The sport is a great skill developer, demanding quick reflexes, fast thinking, and pinpoint passing.

Unlike his sister I am unable to watch from the sides and take pictures as it is deemed 'uncool'..! Louise how ever is more than happy for parental support to attend her sporting activities!! Most recently she took part in a Basketball Tournament.

Apart from Basketball, Louise also plays softball, netball and swims. Dan's school has just had it's 'Swim Gala' he took part in his year's relay. This week his school has their Athletic Challange (Sports Day!) Not too sure if it's going to happen this week as we've just had 49mm of rain in the past 24 hrs! And the forcast is for more to follow in the week! It's also the NZ HOY (Horse of the Year) show in Hasting this week. If we go we'll be needing our Gum boots (wellies!)

Louise is off to Camp the beginning of April. Although we've been told that it's not Camp anymore as this description doesn't cater for learning! So Camp has been renamed to 'Outdoor Education Challenge'!! At the moment the idea of tramping (NZ for walking!) thru the bush and then constructing and sleeping in a bivouac for several nights doesn't appeal!
